Lesson 2: Perifollicular Edema (PFE)
PFE presents as small raised bumps at each follicle site. Sometimes it is subtle, sometimes it is more
visible. Both are normal.
This is the skin responding to heat at the follicle.
PFE can indicate that the follicle was effectively targeted. Not every client will show a strong visible
response, and that is still normal.

Clinical Photo: Heat retention response, athlete client
Widespread reaction extending beyond follicle sites in a client with elevated baseline body heat. Not consistent
with a localized follicular response.

Clinical Photo: Heat retention response, continued session
Same client at a separate session. Widespread, irregular pattern consistent with heat retention. A pre-session
antihistamine protocol was introduced.
