Lesson 10: Healing Progression: Chin and Jaw Burn

The following photographs document the same burn at three stages. This progression is what you
should prepare clients to expect.

Stage 1 – Immediately after the burn
Bluish-purple discoloration across the chin and jaw immediately following the burn. The skin surface may still appear intact but thermal injury is already underway beneath. This is the most treatable stage.

Stage 2 – A few days after the burn
The injury has declared itself fully. Darker hyperpigmented patches, surface breakdown, and an open wound at the site of deepest thermal injury. This stage often appears worse before improvement.

Stage 3 – One week or more after the burn
The wound has closed and the skin is entering the repair phase. Pale hypopigmented patches where the deeper injury occurred. The new skin is fragile and highly photosensitive. Sun protection is critical.
